About Heptapleurum taiwanianum (Nakai) G.M.Plunkett & Lowry
Heptapleurum taiwanianum, synonym Schefflera taiwaniana, 台灣鵝掌藤, is a flowering plant species in the Araliaceae family. It is native to Taiwan, where it grows scattered throughout coniferous forests at elevations from 2,000 to 3,000 m (6,600 to 9,800 ft). It is an evergreen shrub or small tree that reaches 4 m (13 ft) tall and 2.5 m (8.2 ft) broad. Its large palmately compound leaves, up to 15 cm (5.9 in) long, are made of up to 11 ovate leaflets arranged radially around a central stalk. Young leaves are covered in silver hairs, while mature leaves have a smooth surface. It produces sprays of flowers in late summer, followed by dark berries in winter; the berries are a valued food source for insects and birds. Related to ivies of the genus Hedera, Heptapleurum taiwanianum is one of a number of species in the diverse genus Heptapleurum grown ornamentally for its attractive foliage. Once mature, it is hardy down to −10 °C (14 °F), but young plants may need some frost protection. It grows best when planted in a sheltered location alongside other plants that provide sufficient humidity. It has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
