Slight variations in coloration occur across individuals of Heosemys grandis, commonly known as the giant Asian pond turtle. This species' carapace ranges from brown to black, and has a distinct ridge running along its center. Its plastron is yellow, and its head is gray to brown. The giant Asian pond turtle is amphibious, able to live in both water and on land. It inhabits a range of freshwater bodies including lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, and canals. It is omnivorous, and forages for food in both aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Its diet includes worms, larvae, insects, snails, carrion, and both aquatic and terrestrial plants. Like other turtle species, the giant Asian pond turtle has evolved adaptations and specific techniques to capture prey in both aquatic and terrestrial environments.
