This beetle feeds on the foliage of potatoes and other solanaceous crops. It was formerly classified under the name Epilachna vigintioctopunctata, and forms a cryptic species complex. It is frequently mistaken for the closely related species Henosepilachna vigintioctomaculata, which is found in Russia, China, Japan, and Korea, and shares the same common names. This species is native to southeastern Asia, with India as its primary native range. It has been accidentally introduced to other regions across the world, including Australia and New Zealand. It has also been recorded in Brazil and Argentina, with the first records dating back to 1996.
