About Hemiolaus caeculus (Hopffer, 1855)
Hemiolaus caeculus, commonly known as the azure hairstreak, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Lycaenidae. This species is distributed across East and southern Africa. Male individuals have a wingspan ranging from 30 to 35 mm, while female individuals have a larger wingspan of 34 to 38 mm. Adult azure hairstreaks can be seen in flight throughout the year, with population peaks occurring after rains. The larvae of Hemiolaus caeculus feed on plants from the Olax genus, specifically including the species Olax dissitiflora and Olax obtusifolia.
