About Hemileuca hera Harris, 1841

Hemileuca hera, commonly known as the sagebrush sheep moth or Hera buckmoth, is a moth species belonging to the family Saturniidae. This species was first formally described by Thaddeus William Harris in 1841. It is distributed across North America, ranging from southern Saskatchewan westward to British Columbia, and extending south to Arizona and New Mexico. The wingspan of adult Hemileuca hera measures between 71 and 93 mm. Adults are active on the wing from July to September, with flight timing varying by location. Larvae of the subspecies Hemileuca hera hera feed on Artemisia tridentata, Artemisia tripartita, Lupinus, and Eriogonum. Larvae of the subspecies Hemileuca hera marcata feed on Artemisia tridentata.
