About Hemidactylus mercatorius Gray, 1842

Hemidactylus mercatorius, commonly called the merchant gecko, is a species of gecko. There has been longstanding confusion between this species and Hemidactylus mabouia, which has made it difficult to confirm the true distribution ranges of both species. The Reptile Database lists Hemidactylus mercatorius as having a wide distribution across eastern Africa, while the IUCN states that its native distribution is restricted to Madagascar and several other islands in the Indian Ocean, including the Comoros, Seychelles, and Mayotte.
