About Hemichromis fasciatus Peters, 1857

The banded jewelfish, scientifically named Hemichromis fasciatus Peters, 1857, has a yellow-green body with bronze iridescence, and five large, black, glossy oval patches along the side of its body. Older individuals have a small brick-red dot on each scale, and have a large, wide mouth. This species is incredibly aggressive, with behavior consistent with other jewelfish. For keeping banded jewelfish in an aquarium, the most successful setup uses a large tank of 75 gallons or more, with plenty of cover. Only one large adult, or several small juveniles, should be kept together in a single tank. Owners must separate the fish once they grow large enough, as they will kill each other if left together.
