About Hemiandrus maia Taylor Smith, Morgan-Richards & Trewick, 2013
Hemiandrus maia, also known as the Otago ground wētā, shows distinct morphological traits. Female individuals of this species have a medium-length ovipositor. Both males and females share consistent spine patterns on their leg segments: the fore tibiae have one superior prolateral spine, not counting the apical spine; the mid tibiae have two superior prolateral spines and three superior retrolateral spines, excluding apical spines. This species is endemic to the South Island of New Zealand. As a nocturnal ground wētā, it typically stays in underground burrows during the day. At night, it becomes active on the ground, and can also be found in vegetation.
