About Helophilus hybridus Loew, 1846

Scientific name: Helophilus hybridus Loew, 1846

Morphological description: Wing length ranges from 8.5 to 11.25 mm. The top quarter or less of the third femur is yellow. The basal quarter or less of the third tibia is pale. In males, the large yellow spots on tergite 2 reach the hind margin across their full width. The larva of this species was illustrated by Hartley in 1961; see references for species determination.

Distribution: In the Palearctic realm, it ranges from Fennoscandia south to northern France, and from Ireland east through northern and central Europe (including the Alps) into Russia, continuing through the Russian Far East and Siberia to the Pacific coast; it is also found in Mongolia. In the Nearctic realm, it occurs from Alaska to Nova Scotia, and south to Utah.
