About Helleborus argutifolius Viv.
Helleborus argutifolius Viv., commonly called holly-leaved hellebore or Corsican hellebore, has known synonyms including H. corsicus and H. lividus subsp. corsicus. It is a species of flowering plant in the buttercup family Ranunculaceae, native to the islands of Corsica and Sardinia. This plant is an evergreen perennial that grows to 120 cm (47 inches) tall and 90 cm (3 feet) wide. It produces large leathery leaves made up of three leaflets with spiny teeth along their edges. Its green, bowl-shaped flowers bloom in late winter and early spring. The Latin specific epithet argutifolius translates to “with sharp-toothed leaves”, which refers to the plant’s foliage characteristic. When grown in cultivation, Helleborus argutifolius hybridizes easily with the closely related species H. lividus. This species has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
