About Helix nucula Mousson, 1854

Helix nucula Mousson, 1854 is a species of air-breathing land snail. It is a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk that belongs to Helicidae, the family of typical snails. This species has a rounded shell with white aperture margins. It can be distinguished from the similar species Helix figulina by fine spiral grooves on its upper shell surface. In the past, the name Helix nucula was also incorrectly applied to Helix pronuba, an unrelated species found in North Africa and Crete, which caused confusion in existing scientific literature. This land snail lives in areas near the south and west coasts of Turkey, and also in the eastern Aegean Islands of Greece. Research suggests its native range is probably centered mainly in Lebanon, Syria and Cyprus.
