About Heliozela aesella (Chambers, 1877)

Heliozela aesella is a species of moth in the family Heliozelidae. It was first described by Vactor Tousey Chambers in 1877. This moth is found in the United States, where it has been recorded from Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, and Wisconsin, and in Quebec, Canada. Adult moths are active from late April to early each year, with only one generation produced annually. The larvae of Heliozela aesella feed on plants from the Vitis genus. When larvae reach full development, they cut out a protective case, then drop to the ground. After overwintering, pupation occurs inside this cut case. Larvae and their associated galls can be found in late May.
