About Heliconius hecalesia (Hewitson, 1853)

Heliconius hecalesia, commonly known as the five-spotted longwing, is a species of butterfly belonging to the family Nymphalidae. Its range extends from Central America to the countries of Venezuela and Ecuador. The wingspan of adult butterflies measures between 50 and 61 millimeters. Adult five-spotted longwings feed on flower nectar. Caterpillar larvae of this species feed on plants from the Passiflora subgenera Tryphostemmatoides and Plectostemma, specifically including Passiflora biflora and Passiflora lancearea. The larvae are gregarious, meaning they live and feed together in groups. Pupation occurs inside a slate grey pupa that displays black markings.
