About Heliconia bihai (L.) L.

Heliconia bihai (L.) L., commonly called red palulu, balisier, and macawflower, is an erect herb in the Heliconiaceae family. It typically grows to over 1.5 meters in height. This species is native to northern South America and the West Indies. It is especially common in northern Brazil and the Guianas, and can also be found in Hispaniola, Jamaica, the Lesser Antilles, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, Venezuela, and Colombia. Heliconia bihai is grown as an ornamental plant in hot, humid climates corresponding to USDA hardiness zones 9 through 11. It is typically pollinated by bats and hummingbirds. Like other upward-facing flowers in the genus Heliconia, its structure forms a cup-like shape that naturally collects rainwater, providing water for birds and insects. This plant is used as a symbol by two political organizations: the People's National Movement of Trinidad and Tobago, and the Martinique Progressive Party (Parti Progressiste Martiniquais), a political party of the French overseas department of Martinique in the West Indies.
