The shell has a sharply keeled periphery, a wide umbilicus, and a white, strongly reflected, lipped peristome that surrounds the aperture. The shell is colored grey-brown, with some red-brown patches. This species is native to Europe, and is found particularly in Central Europe. Ecologically, Helicigona lapicida feeds selectively on specific lichens that grow on rocky substrates, including the crustose lichen species Verrucaria nigrescens.
