About Helianthus heterophyllus Nutt.

Helianthus heterophyllus Nutt. is a species of sunflower with common names variableleaf sunflower and wetland sunflower. It is native to the coastal plain of the southern United States, ranging from Texas to North Carolina. This is a perennial plant that can reach up to 120 cm (4 feet) tall, and spreads via underground rhizomes. Its stems and leaves are hairless or almost hairless; leaf undersides appear white due to an abundance of wax. One plant can produce 1 to 5 flower heads, each with 12–18 yellow ray florets surrounding at least 100 red or brown disc florets. This species grows in wet sandy soils at low elevations.
