About Helenium bolanderi A.Gray

Helenium bolanderi A.Gray, commonly known as coastal sneezeweed, is a North American flowering plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is native to southern Oregon and northern California, reaching as far south as Mendocino County, and grows primarily along the seacoast. This species is a perennial herb that can grow up to 140 cm (56 inches, or 4 2/3 feet) tall. It produces a generally unbranched, erect stem that bears oval-shaped leaves. Flowers grow on leafless peduncles, with one to three flower heads produced per plant. Each flower head has a fringe of 15 to 30 golden yellow ray florets that curve backward from a rounded center. The center can hold more than 1000 disc florets, which are yellow toward their base and brown or purple near their tips. The fruit this plant produces is a tiny, hairy achene that measures just a few millimeters in length.
