About Hedychium coronarium J.Koenig
Hedychium coronarium J.Koenig is an upright perennial plant that can grow 1 to 3 meters (3.3 to 9.8 feet) tall. It produces long, pointed leaves, and heavily scented white flowers with yellow-colored bases. In its native growing environment, flowering takes place between August and December. This species is native to a range that extends from the Eastern Himalayas—covering the Indian states of Sikkim and Tripura, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan—through the northernmost regions of Myanmar and Thailand, and southern China including Yunnan, Sichuan, Hunan, Guangxi, and Guangdong, all the way east to Taiwan. It typically grows in forest habitats. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant across warm temperate and subtropical regions of the world. In China, it is also grown for medicinal use and for the production of aromatic oil, thanks to the flowers' strong characteristic fragrance, which is described as being similar to jasmine. In the United Kingdom, this plant has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Its flower buds and young flowers are edible.
