About Haminoea hydatis (Linnaeus, 1758)

Description: The scientific name of this species is Haminoea hydatis (Linnaeus, 1758). Adult Haminoea hydatis reach a body length of 8 to 30 millimetres (0.31 to 1.18 inches), while their shells grow to between 8 and 23 millimetres (0.31 to 0.91 inches) in length. The shell is fragile, inflated, and oblong, and is partially concealed by the mantle and parapodial lobes when the snail is crawling. Haminoea hydatis are herbivorous swimming snails that have a dark brown coloration.

Distribution and habitat: This species occurs in southwestern Britain, Ireland, France, and extends from France south to the Mediterranean, Madeira, and the Canary Islands. It is also found on Ascension Island, St. Helena, and along the west coast of Africa. Haminoea hydatis inhabits areas of muddy sand, shell grit, and algae fields.
