About Hamadryas februa (Hübner)

Hamadryas februa (Hübner), commonly known as the gray (or grey) cracker, is a species of cracker butterfly that belongs to the family Nymphalidae. Its range extends northward from Argentina through tropical America to Mexico. Rare stray individuals of this species have been observed as far north as the lower Rio Grande Valley in southern Texas. This species occupies habitats including subtropical forests, forest edges, and cultivated areas that contain trees. The wingspan of adult Hamadryas februa ranges from 70 to 86 mm. In tropical regions, adults are active year-round, while in southern Texas, adults are active from August to October. Adult Hamadryas februa feed on tree sap and rotting fruit. The larvae of this species feed on plants from the Dalechampia and Tragia genera.
