About Haletta semifasciata (Valenciennes, 1840)

The blue weed whiting, scientifically named Haletta semifasciata, is a ray-finned fish species classified as a weed whiting in the family Labridae. This species is endemic to Australia, and is only found along the country’s southern coast. It lives in both brackish and marine waters in sheltered locations, at depths ranging from 1 to 7 metres (3.3 to 23.0 ft). Blue weed whiting inhabits areas with sandy substrate that support seagrass beds. It feeds on small invertebrates, algae, and the seagrasses it lives among. This species reaches a maximum recorded length of 29 centimetres (11 in) standard length. It holds only minor importance for local commercial fisheries. Haletta semifasciata is the only known member of the genus Haletta.
