About Hakea pachyphylla Sieber ex Spreng.
Hakea pachyphylla Sieber ex Spreng. is a non-lignotuberous shrub that grows with a single stem, ranging in form from compact to spreading, and reaches 0.3โ2 m (1โ7 ft) in height. Its small branches are ribbed, and are densely covered with soft mid-red matted hairs; these hairs either quickly wear away to leave the branches smooth, or occasionally remain in place until flowering. The species produces stiff, needle-like leaves that are 1โ5.5 cm (0.4โ2 in) long and 1.1โ1.8 mm (0.04โ0.07 in) wide. Leaves have sparse flat hairs that quickly become smooth, and end in a small point. Its inflorescences grow as axillary clusters that appear in spring, each holding 1 to 7 yellow flowers. The main flower stalk is white, 0.5โ1.2 mm (0.02โ0.05 in) long, and densely covered with short matted hairs. Flowering occurs between August and October. After flowering, it forms oval-shaped fruit that measures 2.9โ3.5 cm (1โ1 in) long and 2.3โ2.6 cm (0.9โ1 in) wide. The fruit surface is covered with small blunt wart-like protuberances, and has a short broad beak with obscure or absent horns. This species has a restricted distribution, only found in the Mount Victoria, Leura, and Newnes area. It grows in swamp, heath, or mallee-heath habitats, and occurs occasionally on sandstone.
