About Haemanthus sanguineus Jacq.

Haemanthus sanguineus Jacq. is a South African bulbous geophyte from the genus Haemanthus. It grows in the fynbos vegetation of the Western Cape, where it is an endemic species. This geophyte is dormant and not visible above ground during the summer. In autumn, a prominent crimson inflorescence emerges from the ground, made up of a crimson stem that holds a cluster of many small individual flowers in shades of red, crimson, and yellow. After the inflorescence appears, the plant grows two circular, leathery leaves that persist through autumn and winter. These leaves lie flat against the ground, and are typically edged with scarlet hairs. The upper surface of the leaves is deep green, while the underside is covered with pink and red spots.
