About Hadena compta (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775

Scientific name: Hadena compta (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775

Technical description and variation: The wingspan of Hadena compta ranges from 25 to 30 mm. Seitz provides the following description: The forewing of Hadena compta is smaller than that of Hadena nana, with a vertical white fascia formed by the confluence of the orbicular stigma, the white blotch beyond the claviform stigma, and a blotch at the middle of the inner margin; there is no apical white blotch. In the form viscariae Guen., the white fascia becomes yellowish or brownish. Hadena humilis (previously referred to as humilis Christ, now recognized as the full species Hadena humilis (Christoph, 1893)), found in Armenia and the Taurus Mountains, also has a discoloured fascia that is much reduced in size, and its ground colour is often dull grey. The larva is reddish grey; it has a red-brown dorsal stripe, which is blotched on each segment and traversed by a distinct white central line; its lateral lines are yellowish; the spiracles are white, set against a cloudy grey background; the head is red-brown.
