About Gyraulus albus (O.F.Müller, 1774)
Gyraulus albus (O.F.Müller, 1774) is a small freshwater snail species. Its shell is rather small, reaching a height of 1.3 to 1.8 millimeters and a width of 4 to 7 millimeters. The shell has a discoid shape with 4 to 4½ body whorls that expand toward the aperture. Both the aperture and the whorls are curved, and do not have a keel. The shell is white, though it is sometimes darkened by accumulated mud, and has a characteristic spiral sculpture. This species is distributed across the Palearctic realm, and is recorded in Belgium, the Czech Republic (where it is classified as least concern, LC), Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Great Britain, and Ireland. This small snail inhabits various types of freshwater environments, living among aquatic weeds and on bottom mud. It does not require a high concentration of calcium to survive.
