Gypsophila vaccaria (L.) Sm. is a flowering plant species that belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family. It is native to the region extending from Portugal and Morocco to the Himalayas, and has been introduced to temperate areas across the globe. One of its many synonyms is Vaccaria hispanica, a name previously used when this was the only species classified in the genus Vaccaria. It has several common names: cowherb, cowcockle, cow basil, cow soapwort, and prairie carnation. This species is an annual herb that has blue-gray, waxy above-ground growth and pale pink flowers. Its seeds are used in Chinese medicine.
