The barred-fin moray (Gymnothorax zonipectis Seale, 1906) is a medium-sized moray eel. It can reach a maximum total length of 50 cm, though most individuals observed are approximately 30 cm long. It has a characteristic serpentine body shape. Its base body color is light brown, and the body is covered in a mixture of darker spots alongside broken, irregular dark brown lines. A relatively large whitish spot sits below the back corner of its eye. The barred-fin moray has a wide distribution across the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from the eastern coast of Africa to Polynesia and Hawaii, and also extending from Taiwan and southern Japan to New Caledonia. This species prefers shallow, detrital waters in habitats including lagoons and external reef slopes, and can be found at depths up to 40 meters (132 feet).
