About Gymnothorax thyrsoideus (Richardson, 1845)

The greyface moray, Gymnothorax thyrsoideus, is a medium-sized fish. Most individuals observed are around 40 cm long, and the species reaches a maximum length of 66 cm. It has a serpentine-shaped body that is predominantly beige in color, with the shade of beige varying between individual eels, and covered in small dark speckles. Its head is grey, with distinctive white eyes. This moray is widespread across the Indo-Pacific region, ranging from India and the Maldives east to Polynesia, and from southern Japan south to Australia and New Caledonia. It prefers shallow, somewhat turbid waters up to around 35 meters deep, and lives in lagoons, protected reefs, and debris-rich areas such as wrecks.
