Gymnothorax pseudothyrsoideus can reach a maximum total length of 80 centimeters. This species does not have any visible dorsal fins. Its body is colored pale yellow, with dark brown spots that are arranged irregularly across the body. Young individuals of this species have white coloring along the margins of their fins. As they mature, this white coloring fades, and only the tip of the tail retains white coloration.
