About Gymnothorax nudivomer (Günther, 1867)
Gymnothorax nudivomer, commonly known as the starry moray, is a large fish species. It can reach a maximum total length of 180 cm, though most individuals observed are smaller than this maximum. It has a serpentine-shaped body with a brown base color covered in small white spots, each outlined in a darker brown than the body's background. The spots are relatively small on the head and increase in size toward the tail. A key identifying characteristic of this moray is the yellow color of the inside of its mouth. Its gill openings are dark brown. The starry moray has a wide distribution across the Indo-Pacific region; its range extends from the eastern coast of Africa (including the Red Sea) to Polynesia and Hawaii, and from southern Japan to New Caledonia. It inhabits the outer slopes of coral reefs, where it shelters in crevices at depths between 1.0 and 272.6 meters (3.3 and 894.3 feet). It is most commonly seen at depths around 30 meters (99 feet).
