About Gymnothorax eurostus (Abbott, 1860)

Abbott's moray eel, with the scientific name Gymnothorax eurostus, is also commonly called the stout moray. It is a species of moray eel belonging to the family Muraenidae. This species is found in the Indo-Pacific region, and it has an antitropical distribution. In the eastern Pacific, Abbott's moray eels occur from Costa Rica to Easter Island, at depths up to 40 m (130 feet). The maximum recorded length of this species is 60 cm (24 inches). Abbott's moray eel is a shallow-water inshore reef species that is not frequently encountered by observers. It is a voracious nocturnal carnivore that feeds mostly on reef fishes.
