Gymnosphaera podophylla (Hook.) Copel. has two synonyms: Alsophila podophylla and Cyathea podophylla. This is a widespread tree fern species native to southern China, Hainan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, the Ryukyu Islands, and Japan. It grows in forests alongside streams and in ravines, at elevations between 600 and 1000 meters.
