Gymnosphaera metteniana has an erect trunk that reaches up to 1 meter in height, with a diameter between 6 and 10 centimeters. It produces tripinnate fronds that measure 1 to 2.5 meters in length. Its stipe ranges in color from brown to purple-black, and is covered in long, broad-based scales that are typically bicoloured: glossy brown with a paler margin. Its sori are round, lack indusia, and are arranged in two rows, with one row positioned on each side of the pinnule midvein.
