Gymnosoma rotundatum (Linnaeus, 1758) is a small species of fly sometimes commonly called the ladybird fly. Adults reach 5 to 6 millimeters in length. This fly has a dark thorax, which is golden in male individuals. It possesses a globular, orange abdomen marked with dark rounded patches running along its midline. The base of the fly's wings are yellow-brown in color. This species has been recorded in the following regions: the British Isles, Belarus, Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine, Denmark, Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Corsica, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Macedonia, Malta, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea, Iran, Russia, Transcaucasia, China, and Taiwan.
