About Gymnobucco bonapartei Hartlaub, 1854
The Grey-throated Barbet (scientific name Gymnobucco bonapartei Hartlaub, 1854) is a dark, robust bird with a distinctive tuft of feathers on its forehead. Its eye color changes across its distribution: it is pale in eastern parts of the range, and dark in western regions. This species is most often seen in small groups, frequently around dead trees within humid forests and secondary growth areas. It can be told apart from the Naked-faced Barbet and Bristle-nosed Barbet by its mostly feathered head and dark bill. Though Sladen's Barbet also has a dark bill, the Grey-throated Barbet is distinguished from it by its feathered head. Its vocalizations include nasal "squeaky toy" calls, sharp "peet" notes, and a dry rattle.
