About Gyas titanus Simon, 1879

This species of harvestman, Gyas titanus Simon, 1879, has long, thick legs. Body size differs by sex: males range from 7 to 8 mm long, while females range from 10 to 12 mm long. Both males and females are solid black. Their chelicerae and pedipalps are whitish. The abdomen is clearly segmented, with distinct white lines running between each abdominal segment. In terms of habitat and ecology, Gyas titanus lives in areas close to rivers and other water bodies. It always occurs in habitats that maintain constant humidity, and actively avoids exposure to direct sunlight. Immature individuals of this species can be found year-round, and they overwinter inside caves. Adult Gyas titanus are only active and visible from June through September.
