About Guttera pucherani edouardi (Hartlaub, 1867)

The three species of crested guinea fowl reach a total length of around 50 cm (20 in), and weigh between 721–1,543 g (1.590–3.402 lb). Their overall plumage is blackish, marked with dense white spots. They have a distinctive black crest on the top of their head; the form of this crest ranges from small curly feathers to down, and varies between species. This crest easily distinguishes crested guinea fowl from other guinea fowl species, with the exception of the plumed guinea fowl. The common names "crested" and "plumed" are often incorrectly applied to these different species. This entry refers to the subspecies Guttera pucherani edouardi, first described by Hartlaub in 1867.
