This species is native to large parts of eastern and southern Africa, ranging from Sudan in the north down to South Africa, and it also grows in Madagascar. It is a perennial herbaceous plant that inhabits wetlands, and reaches a height of 1 meter. Its leaves are kidney-shaped, with margins that are irregularly lobed and serrated. It is the designated type species of the genus Gunnera.
