About Gulella bicolor (T.Hutton, 1834)

This species is a snail with the scientific name Gulella bicolor (T.Hutton, 1834). The snail has an elongated shell that reaches up to 7.5 millimeters in length and 2 millimeters in width. When the snail is alive, its shell appears orange because the orange color of the snail's body shows through the shell. Empty shells of this species are white or pale brown. The shell surface is generally smooth, with slight ribs located at the sutures, and larger ribs at the aperture. The aperture also has four distinct teeth. The original native range of Gulella bicolor is unclear, but it may have originated from Asia or southern Africa. Today, it has a broader distribution after being widely introduced to other regions. It is currently found in the Caribbean, the southeastern United States, Central America, South America, some Pacific Islands, and the Northern Territory of Australia. There are also specific recent and historical first records of this species in introduced locations: it was first reported in Dominica in 2009, first reported in Brazil in 2008, and was introduced to the Seychelles in the mid-19th century, with the first recorded occurrence there in 1867. It also occurs in Nicaragua and the Mascarenes. Gulella bicolor is a carnivorous snail that preys on other snails, including Subulina octona and species belonging to the family Pupillidae.
