About Graptemys oculifera (Baur, 1890)

Graptemys oculifera (first described by Baur in 1890) differs in maximum adult body size between sexes: mature males can reach a carapace length of 10 centimeters (4 inches), while females grow larger, with a maximum carapace length of 22 centimeters (8.5 inches). This species has light-colored rings across its carapace, and these rings are thicker than the rings found on the related species Graptemys nigrinoda. Geographically, Graptemys oculifera occurs most commonly in the Pearl River system, which spans the U.S. states of Louisiana and Mississippi. It shares this entire geographic range with another map turtle species, the Pearl River map turtle (Graptemys pearlensis).
