About Graphomya maculata (Scopoli, 1763)

Graphomya maculata is a species of fly. It is widespread and common across most of Europe, and also occurs in North Africa, including the Canary Islands. Both males and females of this species share the same black and white patterned thorax. Females have a black and white patterned abdomen, while males have orange colouration on their abdomen, as visible in the referenced photograph. Adult Graphomya maculata are not predatory; they are most often found feeding on nectar from flowers growing in meadows, hedgerows, and vegetation along roadsides. In contrast, the larvae of this species are predatory, and feed in muddy pools and damp leaf litter.
