About Graphium arycles (Boisduval, 1836)

For an explanation of terminology used in this description, see External morphology of Lepidoptera. Graphium arycles is smaller than Graphium agamemnon, and has no tails. Its overall body structure matches that of Graphium agamemnon. The upper surfaces of its wings bear pale green patches, which often fade to a yellowish shade after the individual dies. On the forewing, there is an indistinct basal band, a subbasal band, three transverse spots and a smaller apical spot within the cell, plus a discal row of patches where the first and third patches are small, and a submarginal row of small spots. There is also an additional isolated discal spot in the subcostal area, and the last submarginal spot is double; unlike in Graphium agamemnon, the anterior part of this double spot sits directly in front of the posterior part, rather than being shifted toward the disc. There are only 2 spots before the subcostal fork. On the hindwing, there is a three-part subbasal band that runs parallel to the abdominal margin, a discal row of 4 spots (the first of which is large and white), and a submarginal row of 6 spots. The patches on the underside of the wings are arranged almost the same as those on the upper surface, but all patches have silvery scaling. On the hindwing, there is additionally a small costal spot between the subbasal band and the large costal discal spot, and three spots between the third radial vein and the anal angle that are red, rarely yellow. Females are similar in appearance to males.
