The Texas tortoise, scientifically known as Gopherus berlandieri Agassiz, 1857, is a tortoise species belonging to the family Testudinidae. This species is one of six tortoise species that are native to North America. The geographic range of the Texas tortoise G. berlandieri extends from the southern third of Texas, an area roughly parallel to Houston, southwards into the Mexican states of Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas. Across this range, the Texas tortoise lives in semi-arid landscapes dominated by mesquite shrubs and cacti.
