About Goodenia hederacea Sm.
Goodenia hederacea Sm. is a prostrate or ascending perennial herb, with stems reaching up to 80 cm (31 in) in length. Its leaves range in shape from linear to elliptic or round, measure 10โ120 mm (0.39โ4.72 in) long and 3โ25 mm (0.12โ0.98 in) wide, and grow on a petiole that can be up to 40 mm (1.6 in) long. Its flowers are arranged in racemes up to 80 cm (31 in) long, each flower on a pedicel up to 50 mm (2.0 in) long, with linear bracteoles 3โ5 mm (0.12โ0.20 in) long. The sepals are linear to lance-shaped and 3โ5 mm (0.12โ0.20 in) long. The corolla is 8โ15 mm (0.31โ0.59 in) long, with cottony hairs on its outer surface. The lower lobes of the corolla are 3.5โ7 mm (0.14โ0.28 in) long, with wings up to 2 mm (0.079 in) wide. The fruit is an oval capsule 5โ9 mm (0.20โ0.35 in) long. Commonly called forest goodenia, this species typically grows in forest across a variety of soil types, ranging from south-east Queensland to Victoria in Australia. The subspecies Goodenia hederacea subsp. alpestris grows in subalpine grassland and woodland, occurring from south of Kiandra in New South Wales to the higher parts of eastern Victoria's ranges. For cultivation, this species prefers a partially shaded location with some moisture. It adapts to a wide range of soil types, and tolerates both frost and snow.
