This species was first described by Pieter Cramer, and it has a scientific designation dated 1775. It is native to central and southern Africa. Adults of this species have a wingspan ranging from 90 to 120 mm. The larvae of Gonimbrasia tyrrhea feed on plant species from the genera Acacia (specifically Acacia mollissima), Malus, Fagus, Salix, and Laburnum.
