About Goniastrea stelligera (Dana, 1846)

Goniastrea stelligera, commonly called knob coral, is a stony coral species that belongs to the family Merulinidae. It is found in shallow coastal waters off East Africa and across the Indo-Pacific region. This is a common coral species, but its population abundance appears to be declining. The primary threat to Goniastrea stelligera is the destruction of its coral reef habitat, and it is also moderately susceptible to coral bleaching. For these reasons, the International Union for Conservation of Nature has assessed this species' conservation status as near threatened.
