About Gomphocarpus fruticosus (L.) W.T.Aiton

Gomphocarpus fruticosus, commonly known as swan plant or narrow-leaved cotton bush, is a plant species native to South Africa. It is also widespread across Australia and New Zealand, where it acts as a host plant for the monarch butterfly. Tissues of this plant contain enough cardenolides that eating large amounts of its leaves, stems, or fruit can cause death in both livestock and humans. The species has been formally declared a pest in Western Australia, and it is closely related to Gomphocarpus physocarpus.
