About Golovinomyces sordidus (L.Junell) V.P.Heluta

The fungus Golovinomyces sordidus forms thin, white, irregular patches on its host plant leaves. It is a recognizable and common species found in many urban areas around the world. While this fungus mostly infects broad-leaved plantains such as Plantago major, it has also been recorded infecting narrow-leaved plantains like Plantago lanceolata. Narrow-leaved plantains are also commonly infected by another fungus, Podosphaera plantaginis. Since no macromorphological differences between the two species on these hosts are known to date, any records of Golovinomyces sordidus from these hosts are best confirmed via microscopic examination.
