About Goeppertia makoyana (É.Morren) Borchs. & S.Suárez

Goeppertia makoyana is an evergreen perennial plant that grows to 45 centimeters (18 inches) tall. It produces round, pale, glossy green leaves. The upper surfaces of these leaves are marked with dark green blotches that run along the leaf veins, while the lower surfaces are colored deep purple. The leaf shafts of this species are very thin. When new leaves emerge, they are rolled up, and their pinkish-red undersides are visible. Like other species in the Goeppertia genus, G. makoyana grows from a horizontal underground rhizome, from which aboveground growth and root system development occur. This plant needs a minimum temperature of 16 °C (61 °F). In temperate regions, it is most often cultivated as a houseplant. Like other types of prayer plants, G. makoyana raises and closes its leaves at night, then opens its leaves again at dawn.
