About Glyphipterix simpliciella (Stephens, 1834)

Glyphipterix simpliciella is a tiny moth species with a wingspan of 6โ€“9 mm and a body length of 3โ€“4 mm. These small, cryptically colored moths have dark brown forewings with a subtle metallic sheen. Their forewings feature a black apical spot, five white or silvery streaks running along the costa, two streaks crossing the dorsum, and one additional marking in the posterior corner of the wings. The hindwings are dark grey, with matching grey cilia. Males and females of this species look identical in appearance. Glyphipterix simpliciella is quite similar in appearance to the related species Glyphipterix equitella and Glyphipterix schoenicolella. This is a fairly common species. It is distributed across the western portion of the Palearctic realm, and is widespread and common across most of Great Britain and Ireland. It has also been recorded in New Zealand. These small moths live primarily in flower meadows, especially meadows that contain buttercups, and it is common to find many individuals resting on a single buttercup flower.
